Is there a cure for a noisy R-8 receiver?

Dave,

Please give us some more details on the noise problem, such as the following.

What kind of noise is it?
When does it occur?
What are the settings on the R8 when you notice the noise?
Can you do anything to decrease the noise.?

Noise all the time when on, connecting an antenna barely overrides the noise coming from speaker.

Dave,

It's going to be really difficult for any of us to diagnose the problem without being able to hear the noise. All I can say at this point is that I haven't heard about a noise problem with other R8's. Try powering your R8 with a 12-V DC power supply instead of using the AC power cord to see if the noise goes away. The noise might be coming from the internal AC power supply. It could also be originating from the audio output circuit but using a DC power supply wouldn't help in that case. Is there some way that you can post a video with sound or just an audio file to this group or maybe Youtube so we can play it and hear the noise?

Record YouTube snippet or something -

I’ve repaired numerous R8’s.

Need to hear an audio sample.

Colin,

What were the most common R8 problems that you found? Which was the hardest to diagnose? Does the original R8 seem to have more problems than the later models, because of its age?

Noisy as in ?

Buzzing, whining, regular static? What bands/modes/filter setting?

Need more info.

Make sure all the connectors are connected on the circuit board. I recently experienced this when I cleaned my connectors and misaligned a pin on one of them - I guess I missed one of the pins.

Result -> noise and basically no reception. After realigning it it was fine.

Couldalso be that you need to clean the connectors, apparentlythis is a common thing.

That's what we are trying to determine. Is it AC hum from the power supply or something related to the signal path itself? We also can't rule out the possibility of noise from the digital processing circuity. It could be somethng as simple as a bad chassis ground connection on one of the circuit boards or the
mini-coax connectors on the boards. I loosen and retighten all the ground screws on the PCBs every year or so. I also reseat all of the wiring connectors on the PCBs.

This would be interesting to know.

Colin,

What were the most common R8 problems that you found?

Capacitors in the audio circuit shorting out one of the DC buses...

Noisy pots.

Loose circuit board interconnects.,

Which was the hardest to diagnose?

An AGC oddity that turned out to be a dirty interconnect socket

Does the original R8 seem to have more problems than the later models, because of its age?

Just some 470uf Caps in audio circuit that must be replaced in all R8’s

Good Ideal Colin.

Noisy as in ?

Buzzing, whining, regular static? What bands/modes/filter setting?

Need more info.

I sent mine off when it was still young and I forget why.

Maybe three years ago, I sent it for repairs due to

“Capacitors in the audio circuit shorting out one of the

DC buses” problem.

It has been working fine since.

My BOO BOO had the attenuator on.

Dave,

So the "noise" was the normal background 'white noise' that you hear when not having enough antenna signal with the attenuator on. Is that right? What kind of antenna are you using?

Mine has only had one strange bug (outside the caps in the audio circuit).

When I put in the VHF converter board, if I am listening to VHF, I can turn it on, set the squelch to quieten the receiver and sit back and listen. Start with a S1 say on the meter with the receiver fully quietened. As time goes on, the S meter slowly rises until the radio breaks squelch...maybe over a 5 or 10 minute interval. Turn the radio off, immediately turn it back on, S-meter resets and we start the cycle over again.

Never have figured out what is happening.

From memory IC-R7000's do this because due to design error there's a capacitor sitting somewhere in the signal path with no discharge point and it slowly charges up and upsets a bias voltage and things go pear-shaped. Putting a 1 megaohm resistor from it to ground cures the problem.

T'would be interesting to find the R8 VHF converter was the same.

Correct. Using a 40 meter dipole.
