I'm confused. The ingredients list shows Sauce: Half cup heavy cream, whipped. Then under "For the Sauce" it says 1 cup heavy cream. Which is it? Both?

This recipe definitely needs more than 20-25 minutes to cook. I cooked for a total of about 45 minutes with the last 15 covered with foil to avoid further browning. It looks and smells delicious.

Cooking time is closer to 40 minutes than 20Sauce makes a bit more than the pudding can absorb, but makes for great texture and taste

I would reduce sugar by half for both cake and sauce recipe otherwise super sweet which over powers the rich and decadent flavour of malva

I wanted an authentic South African desert and was excited to find this here. It reminded me of high tea at the Mount Nelson Hotel! Definitely needs a bit more than 25 minutes to bake though. Otherwise an entirely delightful dessert. It was an absolute hit with my friends!

Baked the pudding for 30 minutes and spooned 2/3 of sauce over as it came from the oven. Pudding served 3h later w remaining 1/3 of sauce on side. Tasted like the Malva pudding I had on vacation in Capetown.

john

what do you do with the 3 tbs of cake flour

MJane

You add it to the 1 cup cake flour and beat it into the sugar/egg/butter/jam mixture per the recipe. The recipe seems to call for a smidge more flour than 1 cup but not quite 1-1/4 cup.

I first enjoyed malva pudding in Namibia in 2019. It was a welcome luxurious treat after a very long day in the field. Since then I’ve tried several recipes and this one most closely resembles that first bite. I find that halving the “sauce” recipe ingredients, which is “part two” of the recipe, is ample. The sauce is drizzled to soak into the moist cake/pudding. Some day I’ll heat up some berries and throw them on top for a little sweet sour contrast.

I put considerably higher amounts of apricot jam into mine , 4 Tbsp in the cake itself plus a few more in the sauce . Covered for the remaining 20 minutes ( extra ) cooking time . Found the sauce to be a tad cloying , but otherwise was exactly what I was hoping it to be

It took around 40 minutes to bake---certainly not ready at 25 minutes. It might be ready at 25 minute if using a convection oven.I found that my cake did not absorb all the sauce---I might halve it next time.

They messed up the recipe here. The whipped cream should be an optional topping to cut the sweetness.

I think the idea is that the ingredients include sauce and whipped cream. Then the sauce ingredients are shown below.

Made once with rave reviews. Upon request made again. Second time I uppped the apricot jam to about 1/4 cup in the cake, and added some to the sauce. Cut back on the sugar in the sauce too. Second time I baked in advance, then just warmed in the oven while the sauce came together. Poured about 1/3 of the sauce over cake, and served warm with extra sauce on the side (that everyone used) with not too sweet whipped cream. Easy to make and everyone loves it. Native South African approved.

A strange combination of ingredients but a delicious dessert. Could not be easier to prepare. It took about 30 minutes to bake fully.
