Born on January 4, 1947, in Oxfordshire, Rick Stein is a much-loved celebrity chef and restaurateur.

After leaving school, he started his career off in hotel management in London.

But after the sudden loss of his father, Rick travelled the world, visiting New Zealand and Mexico.

Back in England, Rick studied English literature at New College, Oxford University.

Rick has since opened several more restaurants and published over 25 cookbooks, with a television career spanning almost 40 years.

The youngest, Charlie, born in 1985, is a wine merchant turned director at The Rick Stein Group.

In 2022, Rick underwent open heart surgery and was told he would die without having the major operation after he struggled with breathlessness.

Now fully recovered from the procedure, in 2024 he opened up about how the traumatic experience had made him aware of his mortality.

But the chef said that despite this, he is determined to live life to the full with his family, and enjoy the time he has.

In an interview withThe Times,he said: "Having had the operation and recovered, the improvement in my health has left me tremendously optimistic.

"Even though at my age and with the normal realities of life I’m not going to last that much longer, I think as long as you’ve got your health and you’re optimistic generally and enjoying your life, you don’t tend to ponder too much about how little life you’ve got left."
